CLOSED IN!!!!!

Upon returning to our apartment we realized that at least another foot of snow arrived while we were gone for the week. Thus, our kitchen window appeared to be closed in with snow.

David kindly went out and shoveled the snow away this morning so we can see the bottoms of the trees again!

I've also discovered the brilliant idea (thanks to someones suggestion) of how to work in a place other than home...go to the library! The Huntsville Library is about 10 minutes away, but was totally worth the drive to be able to sit in the sun while working for several hours this morning. Now David will be able to tell me that I have no excuse for going stir crazy and driving him crazy. =]

Toronto Highlights

We had a lovely week in Toronto staying with Georgette, a friend of David's family. She is originally from Jordan and is an incredible cook! We were her "sweeties" for the week!


Our 3 days of meetings went well. Now it's time to do all the follow-up work in preparation for Summer Ministry. David and I are currently working on writing a script for the story of Rahab- David from the spies point of view for the male summer missionaries while I'm working from Rahab's point of view for the girls to present. We've never been on the writing side of the summer lessons before, so it creates a new challenge to depend on the Lord for!

The Teacher Trainings were also stretching but encouraging. Being with the students is always way more rewarding than the lesson preparation stage of things! David was even willing to be a "strolling musician" to sing the "Application Song" that I had made up. It's so wonderful having a partner who is willing to do crazy things for me!

Milk in Bags

Ever since coming to Canada, I have been struck by a novel idea, to me as an American at least, while quite normal and everyday to those in Ontario...milk comes in bags not cartons!

Once again I was reminded of this oddity as I prepared for a teacher training class on Friday where I previously used an illustration where I needed "an emptied gallon milk jug filled with water" but alas, what was once common is now foreign. One more little quirk of living in Canada! (Milk comes in 4L size, divided into 3 bags, equalling more than a gallon for about $4 CD.)

Good News Clubs

Please pray that we will be able to set up meetings with the principals at the public schools in Minden and Cumberland Beach (Orillia).

Giant Snowman

Yes, this is a real picture with a real house and real snowman that is over 20 feet tall!

I was skiing through our neighborhood yesterday and was shocked to discover this thing! I made David come to see it after he finished snowblowing. He thought it was pretty amazing too.

It was featured in the Huntsville Weekender newspaper today. The people's 22-year-old son made it with his friends over the holidays. "This is the third snowman Taylor, who is an engineer in Toronto, has built on his parent's property in the last four years."

Merry Christmas and Happy New Year!

This was my first year to NOT spend Christmas and New Years in Minnesota with my family (because of immigration I can't leave Canada until the process is complete - hopefully by next Christmas!) However, as I was reminded "Luke 2 is the same worldwide"! When taken away from all the things I'm used to associating with Christmas, I've been reminded to search deeper for the true celebration of our Saviour's birth.

We were able to lead several Christmas Carol Sings - a neat experience to spread Christmas joy throughout December. Also, the Christmas Parties at the schools and teaching Sunday School was another neat reminder in sharing with the kids the true meaning of Christmas.

We spent Christmas week with David's family(that includes Boxing Day, Dec 26th- basically the equivalent of "Black Friday", in the U.S). We played games, HOCKEY!!!, watched "A Muppet's Christmas Carol" and had fun being together. There's definitely a lot more people around for David's families' Christmas than mine in Minnesota!

David's gift to me was to make me a shelf to attach on top of the desk his parents got me for Christmas. (Yahoo for not having to work off our kitchen table soon!) He spent hours and hours and hours planing, sanding, cutting and staining the wood. He had me choose something for him to carve in the sides (Psalm 19:14 -"May my words and thoughts be pleasing in Your sight, My Rock and My Redeemer") slightly reiterated so it wasn't as long. I cut out each letter and stenciled it on so David could router it out. It turned out beautifully. The stain wasn't dry before we left, so it will come home whenever we can make it back.

Snow Boots

I had a Canadian moment on Sunday. David and I went to some people's house for dessert, knowing we would have to walk through snow. So, for the first time in my life, I left my shoes at home and did what I told myself what I would never do...only wear boots somewhere, but alas, such is the place I have moved to - the Muskokas of Canada, the land of snow!

(David's boots are the huge ones...nearly 2 feet tall!)

Minnesota to Ontario

My parents blessed us greatly and gave us their car! Originally we were just going to borrow it to bring my things from Minnesota to Ontario, but decided to take up their generous offer so that I would be able to drive our car (David's car was a standard) and it should last longer (hopefully!).

Thank you to those of you that were praying about importing it...David was able to get it all taken care of in time! Praise the Lord! The whole thing ended up costing more than we had anticipated because of passing the safety, but David's Grandpa worked with several weekends to get things taken care of! What a blessing!

It is a little sad for me to lose my last declaration of "I am from Minnesota!" wherever we drive, but it's a necessary part of moving to Canada.

End of the parties

We just came from our last Christmas Party - we ended up being involved in 5 clubs over the last two weeks. David led Christmas songs with his guitar, we played games, learned "Luke 2:10-11", had a snack, I told the Christmas story - or the story within another story, David did some Gospel Magic (the kids loved that and it helped them grasp the message!) and did a craft! Three more parties were originally planned in schools but because of lack of invitations, things didn't quite happen. We had a range of 49 to 13 children at 3 public schools, 1 Christian school and 1 church that's right next to a public school.

14 kids came back to talk with David or me for counseling, with 6 seeming to make a decision to follow Christ! Please pray for these new believers and those that are still searching to know Christ.

SNOW!

Winter is truly upon us! It has snowed everyday for the past month (except one or two days) and is to keep snowing! David already had to shovel off the roof last weekend! Thankfully we are still loving winter and David gets a thrill out of driving in 6 inches of snow, so things are good! Thankfully weather hasn't been a problem to get to any of the Christmas Parties so far!
